Knitting and Editing

Yesterday I made and named a Word document 'Noble Imposter0-05'. That's Precisely Terminated's sequel, version 5.

Now each of the versions isn't a full draft, mind you. The first version might be the first ten chapters, and then I decide I want to drastically change chapter 3. This becomes a new version (02) and version 1 stays 10 chapters long.

I run my versions and documents this way so that I don't lose any original work. I believe 03, 04, and 05 are the only complete drafts I have.

03 is the first full draft, 04 is the draft after it was edited by my first run editor and 05 is the second editor's turn.

My second editor (third, if you count me, kind of confusing, isn't it?) prints out the document, marks it up, and gives the document back to me with all sorts of comments and such. All rather discouraging to the write but very necessary!

So yesterday I started on her edits. Noble Imposter-05. I believe I'm to chapter 4 now. It's slow going because I happen to be knitting at the same time as I edit.

Wonder what I'm knitting?

Well. I post a picture of the final product. =)

Back to editing!

Noble Imposter

I don't remember if I told you, but Noble Imposter is the title of Precisely Terminated's sequel, the second book in the Cantral Chronicles. I think I did, but it won't hurt to say it again!

Anyway.

Round 1 of edits is done. Round 2 is almost done.

And there was much rejoicing.

Currently I smell like wood smoke because I was out at a church event for most of the evening and there were some fires because it's very cold. I've been spending the evenings spinning yarn on my spinning wheel and not much else other than that and editing.

What I really need to do is get to work on some Christmas presents for my sisters!

Monica's Necklace - A Gift Idea

For those of you who have read Precisely Terminated, you should know that Monica has a necklace that she wears almost everywhere she goes.

This necklace has a computer chip inside a glass vial.

If she wants to eat, bathe, and move around freely, she must have this with her at all times.

And now you can have one too!

They are now for sale on my etsy site, and they make great Christmas gifts! =)

Easy to Forget

That's what blogging is- easy to forget to do. It's been six days since my last post.

Of course, not much has happened since then. Just editing, house cleaning, editing, spinning yarn.

I finished spinning a fleece that someone hired me to process. I ended up getting 6 1/2 skeins of yarn out of it. It's a very pretty pewter color. I should take pictures of the skeins before I hand them over.

Also, I had to take my cat, Ferdi to the vet because she had something wrong with her neck. That's always disappointing, but she seems to be okay now.

So it's back to writing. Only 9 chapters to go starting this morning! Noble Imposter is on it's way to being finished. Of course, after this stage of edits, I have a few more, but still, it's a start.

It's the Little Things

That can really mess up a writing day.

And big things, too, but those are usually more noticeable.

Yesterday I had to help my mother get things done so she could take my grandfather to the Dr. for various tests. He lives with us now, so quite often my mom is driving him places.

Then I tried to settle down to edit, but that always takes me awhile to get into the 'groove'. Totally my fault, but my mind tends to wander to other things. Like fluffy ducks. Or things of that nature.

Another little thing that takes up time is this blog. But it's fun. So I shall continue.

I ended up editing two chapters, despite a lot of my morning being taken up to make our daily juice. Vegetable juice is supposedly good for us, but I'm not quite sure, seeing as it's dark green, stains skin, and tastes vile. Yet, I keep drinking it.

After my two 'chapters of the day' were done and edited, I sent them off to my second editor, the fabulous Ruth and went to spin some yarn of another sort.

Currently, I have a fleece I'm supposed to be spinning into yarn for someone, but I'm very behind on it, thanks to the tour and editing Noble Imposter. Yesterday I got two skeins of yarn spun, so that's a good dent put into that fleece. I should be able to finish it in the next three days or so.

Once that was done, I had to run to the post office, library, grocery store, and the auto shop so the van could have an oil change. When I say 'run', by the way, I don't mean literally.

Today will be the same-ish. Helping my mom get ready to go somewhere (but with my sisters this time, she's taking them, not my grandfather), running errands, editing, and spinning.

At least I have some spiffy socks to keep my feet warm.

Editing, Editing, Editing

That's all I'm doing right now.

Not much going on besides that. Just a few things here and there.

At least I get to wear cool socks whilst I edit.

Here's a couple of paragraphs from Noble Imposter - Still a rough draft, subject to change, but I like it. :)

The soft whisking noises from scrub brushes scuffled from beneath tightly closed doors. Whispers that only a trained wall slaves’ ear could pick up danced through the halls as Monica hurried along.

As she darted by the main school room door, her heart ached. The wall slaves, hard at work as always, their noises so familiar to her, yet now so foreign. Would she ever be able to free them? Everything seemed so fruitless—from the making of friends with the Nobles, to the mission for the tablet. Would she ever get to see the computers that held them all captive?

Home At Last

We arrived home late on November 19th, so we've been home for awhile now, but I've been rather busy.

When we arrived home, we unpacked and took inventory of all our books and did a lot of sorting through receipts so we could enter all of our expenses in a spreadsheet. That took us a day and a half by itself.

After that my brother and his wife arrived from Florida to visit us over Thanksgiving weekend. We had a lot of fun visiting with them and hanging out.

Thanksgiving wasn't eventful. My 5 cousins and my aunt and uncle came over, and my brother and his wife from Florida were here and my other brother and his wife were visiting from where they live, and my parents and sisters, and grandfather (who lives with us) were here as well for a total of 17 people. Pretty full house. We had to have the necessary 'Kids' table. Which I am no longer a part of. ;)

Since then I've been editing Noble Imposter!

People are probably going to stop reading this blog because it's so dull. Once we're home from the tour I hope to update more with more interesting reports.

Hello from North Carolina!

Hello from North Carolina!

We spoke in Georgia last night and I got to see my friends Kate, Amy, Ruth, Rebekah, and Sarah. It was great seeing them again, I don't get to see them often enough.

Today we talked twice at one school and will speak there again this evening, hopefully to the parents. We'll see who actually comes out and sees us. After school events often aren't well attended. Who wants to go back to school after they've been there all day?

In Florida!

We're in Florida, and I'm so glad. I really enjoy seeing all the live oak trees and Spanish moss. Spanish moss that is technically, neither Spanish or moss, but I still like it.

Tomorrow we have two events, and I have a radio, so as always, this will be a short numbers update.

Home Again

We're home again, but for only two days this time!

Once the two days is up, we're heading for Florida. This part of the tour will be a little bit more relaxing, but not all that much. We'll be visiting friends and family in the middle of trying to get all these events done!

Yesterday we were in Rockford, IL until around 2:30PM before heading home. We arrived home around 1:30AM, so I'm pretty tired. Trying to get caught up on everything.

Noble Imposter is begging to be edited!

Seattle, WA

Yesterday we had four talks at one school as well as a writing workshop with a talk there as well.

We didn't finish until 9:30PM and then we had to drive from Portland to Auburn, WA! We didn't arrive to our host family's house until around 1.

Today we had only one school event and a dinner with some fans. I got to see a good friend of mine who I haven't seen in awhile.

I updated the tour blog more, so you can read more details there, though not of these days yet.

Albany, OR

Hello from Albany, Oregon. :)

We had a school event and a writing workshop today, bringing my total to 25 talks.

We had a book signing at a Barnes and Noble yesterday, but they didn't get Precisely Terminated in in time for the signing! So I sat there and past out bookmarks to people to draw them to the table so they'd look at my dad's books, because the B&N people wouldn't let me sell my books from my inventory, so that doesn't count towards my signing total. ;)

I hope you all are having a wonderful day. I am rather tired, and I'm going to bed. Tomorrow is another school event and another writing workshop.

Announcements on more exciting things to come . . . later. :)

Medford, Oregon

Hello from Grant's Pass, Oregon!

We had THREE book signings today. :)

They were pretty slow, we think it was because of the nice weather.

In other news, the Amazon Blitz went amazingly. :) My amazing readers brought the ranking of Precisely Terminated up to 1,897! Wow!

Thanks so much everyone!

My dad and I are at the Redding Public library right now in the middle of a writing workshop. I just finished speaking, and I'm working on Noble Imposter, Precisely Terminated's sequel while my dad speaks.

We're heading to Medford, Oregon tonight, four hour drive, should be fun!

A Day of Rest?

Today we visited a church with a fan and his family before having a book talk at another fan's house (along with their large group of friends) and then another talk at a church.

We were going, going, going all day long and had lots of delays, including a flat tire and I've just been run ragged today, so not much of an update. :)

Traveling

Sorry for being so lax on posting here. I've been rather busy with this tour, and I've been updating the Davis Crossing Tour blog every day.

www.daviscrossing.blogspot.com

I wanted to update here today to add up all the events I've done so far. I want to keep track so when I've reached 1,000 or something, we can celebrate. Maybe do a book giveaway. ;)

So here is my total event count.

We've been rather busy the past few days, getting up at 6AM and staying up until 12AM. Noble Imposter, the sequel to Precisely Terminated isn't growing very quickly because of this delay, but I think I can still get it turned in on time.

Tour Day Two - Dallas, TX Area

For those of you wondering, we drove a total of 543.7 miles yesterday. :)

We'll be keeping track of our day to day mileage and the trip total as well.

Today we traveled around the Dallas, Texas area. First we visited a home school group, then a Christian school, and then a youth group.

It'll take me a moment to collect my thoughts. It's 11 PM, and I've been up since 6ish, so I am rather tired. This hotel room is also uncommonly cold. But I shall survive. :)

Our first stop was in Watauga, Texas for a writing seminar with a homeschool group.
My dad did most of the talking at this one, but I did a short little speech in there, too.

After the co-op group we rushed off to Prince of Peach Christian Academy in Carrollton, Texas.
This school was very receptive, we spoke to the 3 - 8th graders, I believe.

One family drove out to see us from Oklahoma! Three hours away!
We were impressed.

After Prince of Peace we stopped for dinner before trekking to a friend's house and hanging out with them for a bit. Funny enough, I forgot to take a picture of them, but I did get a picture of their cat, Lily!

A short break at their house refreshed us, and we were soon off to a youth group talk in Justin, Texas. Which apparently sells a ton of cowboy boots. I don't know much about that. I don't think I've ever even worn a pair of cowboy boots

This last group was great and listened attentively and seemed to really get something out of our message. I hope they did, anyway. :)

It took us awhile to get back to the hotel because our GPS decided to suddenly freeze and not tell us anything for a few minutes. We had to reboot it before it would do anything. No idea why it did that, but now it's fine again, we're safely back at the hotel and I am going to bed.

We do have a video coming up, but it's too late to be doing that tonight. It has our 'word of the day' in it, too. Read more about that in the contest rules. :) I hope to post the video tomorrow.

On The Road to Texas

I'm going to be reposting updates from my dad's and myauthor blog here.

Today is the first day of the Davis Crossing Tour!

Of course all we’re doing today is traveling, but one must do that to get to events. J Unfortunately, our teleporter is currently out of commission. My hippopotamus sat on it. You can see his picture later in this post.

I washed the van this morning so we could put the nifty tour magnets on the side. Then I had to get cleaned up just 15 minutes before we pulled out of the driveway. Hence why my hair is wet in these pictures.

All packed up and ready to go. Like our snazzy shirts?

We didn’t leave until around 11AM this morning because it’s only eight hours to Dallas, our destination, and we haven’t any events until tomorrow at 9AM.

The morning hours were spent with last minute preparations. We had to unpack the van and pack the trailer because it was deemed that the van could not hold all the weight, though everything did fit inside! So we’re bringing the trailer with us on all our stops in the USA. We’ll have to leave it in Seattle when we go to Canada—too much of a hassle to bring across the border.

I'm holding Sam, my hippopotamus,
and my dad is holding Vinnie, the official tour rat.

We passed through Mississippi first, but I failed to get a picture of the welcome sign, sorry. I did, however, get a picture of the Tennessee welcome sign when we reentered TN on our way to Memphis. That’s the way the route goes.

As I am writing this blog post, we are driving through Arkansas. We saw a crop duster plane a few minutes ago, which was interesting. It’s cool to see them swoop over the fields and turn around for another pass.

Today’s state count will be four once we reach Texas. Four if you count Tennessee, that is. Some people might not, seeing as it’s where we started, but I do. It is a state after all.

I hope to see a lot of people at our events tomorrow!

See the blog this post is from here

Going on an Book Tour

In just five days my father, Bryan Davis, and I will embark on a 2 1/2 month long book tour.

It's going to either turn us into zombies or . . . something. We'll see at the end, now won't we. :)

I plan on living off of Dr. Pepper and Reese's Cups most of the time.

We leave on September 13th for Dallas, Texas with three school visits on our first official day of the tour, September 14th.

Now, since I am a first time novelist, I have never really given author talks, or writing seminars, or spoken in front of hundreds of people, so this will be very interesting. At home I am naturally a quiet person. I spend my days sewing, spinning, or writing, and rarely say much of anything verbally, so my voice is not very loud or strong.

If I talk for more than 20 minutes, I get a sore throat, if I have a 1 1/2 hour conversation, I lose my voice. That being said. This is going to be a very fun experience, getting my voice into shape.

My dad, on the other hand, can talk for 5 hours and be fine. After seven years of touring and giving author talks, that's as it should be, yes?

I hope to update here quite frequently as we travel. Also you can check out our tour blog at www.daviscrossing.blogspot.com. We plan on posting contests, pictures, and some videos from our experiences on the road. It should be a lot of fun, so I'd greatly appreciate it if you'd check it out. :)

On this tour, we will be traveling to approximately 31 states and British Columbia.

How many states have you visited?

Precisely Terminated Amazon Blitz

Ever heard of an Amazon Blitz?

It's where a group of people buy a specific product (usually a book or movie) on a specified day to help boost that item's ranking. Boosting a ranking helps the item get recognition by people who are perusing Amazon and helps the author get known (If it's a book).

I'm doing one of these blitzes for Precisely Terminated and would love it if anyone here could participate. :)

Details below:

Time: September 24, all day long

Activity: Buy Precisely Terminated at Amazon.com on that date.

Purpose: To help get Precisely Terminated known and to boost its ranking on Amazon. Also, you’ll be getting a great book. ;)
...
Reward: If you email me on September 24 with proof of purchase from Amazon, I will send you an autographed adhesive label to put in the book as well as a bookmark. The label will have a graphic of Precisely Terminated on it. You'll also get a big hearty THANK YOU!

Proof of purchase can be the email Amazon sends you to confirm your order.

We really want to get Precisely Terminated’s Amazon book ranking as high as we can, so please participate if you are able. :)

I will try to be on my author page, doing Q&A and posting ranking updates during this event. Please come and hang out and ask questions.

Precisely Terminated is Off to the Printer!

Yes, the publisher is sending Precisely Terminated to the printer this evening! Hurrah!

Lots of last minute emails were flying back and forth between my editor and me this morning and yesterday evening, but it's all done now.

Here is the final cover.

With microchips implanted in their skulls at birth, the slaves of Cantral and Cillineese have labored under the tyrannical rule of the nobles and their computers for centuries. Monica, a noble who avoided the implanting and escaped a death sentence at the age of four, is now sixteen and is in hiding. She lives with the slaves inside the walls of the Cantral palace, pretending to be one of them while the slave council plots a way to use her chip-less state to destroy the all-powerful computers that strike down any hint of rebellion.

The fate of millions rides on Monica’s shoulders. As the only chip-less person in the world, she must find a way to destroy the computers and free Cillineese from the nobles’ iron fist before they strike with the ultimate punishment—death for everyone inside the city walls.

Cantral Chronicles Book 2

You know I've been working on the sequel to Precisely Terminated for awhile, right?

Well, I have.

Anyway, since it's the second book in the Cantral Chronicles trilogy I've just been calling it CC2, because I didn't have a title yet.

I didn't have a title for months, and since PT's release date is drawing in fast, I was starting to feel a little anxious about this lack of a title for its sequel. It's kind of good to be able to tell people what the sequel will be called!

So my dad and I brain stormed for a bit and came up with the title.

...

Noble Impostor

--

What do you think?

I like the little oxymoron going on in there, and that the play on words. Royalty in this world are called Nobles, so someone impersonating them would be a Noble... but impostor... yeah. I'm sure you get it. ;)

I've just been writing away. I'm at 42,000 words now. I really need to step up the pace, however, seeing as we're leaving on tour soon and my deadline is October 1st

Friday, July 22, 2011

Upcoming Tour

In the months of September, October, and November, I will be away from my home almost the entire time.

Would you like to know why?

Well, I'll tell you anyway.

My dad, author Bryan Davis, and I will be going on a tour across the country (and a wee bit into Canada) on a promotional tour.

Some dates are scheduled, some are still tentative, but we will be driving a total of about 10,000 miles and visiting many states, from the east coast, northern border, mid west, west coast, and up into British Columbia.

When I have a specific schedule, I'll post it here.

Meanwhile, we're busy with preparations.

One of which includes coming up with a tour logo. My dad and I brain stormed yesterday and came up with an idea to use a road sign and other things.

So last night and this morning I worked on a logo that we will be using on the side of our van as a magnetic sign. We also might get t-shirts. We'll see.

What do you think?

The dragon is the representation for my dad, since he writes dragon books. The bunny is for me because ... well... because my family often calls me a bunny, and I call myself that, too, and bunnies are just adorable.

Internation Christian Retail Show

Every year around July or so an event is held called the International Retail Show (ICRS). It was held in Georgia this year.

This is a convention of booksellers and bookstore owners who gather to meet and discuss various things and sell and buy books for the year.

Authors are invited as well as incentive for bookstore owners to come and buy more books. Apparently, they like meeting authors.

I've been to almost every ICRS since 2004 (I've missed one or two here and there), despite the fact that I wasn't an author until this year. My dad started going long before 2004 as a media person and then as an author in '04.

This year it was my turn to go as an author. Though Precisely Terminated isn't out yet and won't be until October, my publisher decided to print about 50 advanced reader copies (ARCs) to have for the book buyers to pick up and take so they have an idea what the book is about and are more likely to buy it to stock in their stores once it is out.

So we had a book signing and all the books were picked up.

This was Monday, July 11, the first day of ICRS.

Here are some pictures from the signing.

Please note that the cover that you see on the ARCs is not the final cover. There will be a completely different cover on PT when it is released. When I have the final cover, I will post it here.

After the signing I was informed that Roma Downey, the actress who plays Monica in Touched By An Angel was at ICRS and signing posters for some DVD thing she was doing, so we met her, and I had my picture taken with her.

And no, Monica from Precisely Terminated did not get her name from this Monica.

On Tuesday the 12th I had two interviews with two magazines and a talk with my publicist, and after that we drove home to Tennessee.

New 'Bling'

In Precisely Terminated the main character, Monica, has to wear a small glass vial with a computer chip in it around her neck. This is so she can infiltrate various places and to keep the Nobles from knowing she doesn't have a chip of her own.

I decided I wanted this same type of necklace for myself. I ordered some small (1 inch tall) glass vials from etsy and cut up an old piece of RAM (a computer memory chip) and inserted the cut piece into the vial.

I'll soon find a string to thread through the hole and the necklace will be complete. I'm glad the computer chip doesn't run like the ones in the story!

Second Speaking Event

I had my second speaking even ever on the 1st. My dad was invited to a conference to speak, and the conference directors had me speak for ten minutes or so.

It was a short time, but I'm not very practiced at speeches yet, anyway so I did not mind at all.

Next event I have is a book signing at the annual Christian book seller's convention (ICRS - International Christian Retail Show). I also have some interviews there, and my dad has a signing as well.

Precisely Terminated - A Synopsis

Here is a short synopsis of Precisely Terminated. I hope you will enjoy it and consider reading my novel.

With microchips implanted in their skulls at birth, the slaves of Cantral and Cillineese have labored under the tyrannical rule of the nobles and their computers for decades.

The nobles hear of Monica’s survival and try to exterminate her before she ruins their upper-class utopia. The rebels send her to find a missing paper bearing instructions on how to shut down the computers that control the chips in Cillineese, a major city-state. The nobles are alerted to the plan and prepare to seal Cillineese in a giant dome to gas the inhabitants, including Monica.

The fate of millions rides on Monica’s shoulders. As the only chip-less person in the world, she must find the paper, destroy the computers, and free Cillineese from the nobles’ iron fist before they strike with the ultimate punishment—death for everyone inside the city walls.
